Mein Ziel ist es, bei den Olympischen Spielen in Athen im Straßenrennen und auf der Bahn in der Verfolgung anzutreten. Ich weiß, dass ich mir da viel vorgenommen habe. Bahn-Bundestrainer Hartnick und BDR-Sportdirektor Bremer haben mich vor längerer Zeit mal angesprochen, ob ich mir nicht vorstellen könnte, wieder auf der Bahn zu fahren. Ich habe lange darüber nachgedacht. Ich bin seit der DM 1996 oder 1997 keine Bahnrennen mehr gefahren. Diese Woche bin ich in Berlin einen Test gefahren, die Zeit war in Ordnung, erst recht, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich mitten in der Crosssaison bin. Am 29.Januar findet in Frankfurt/Oder die Überprüfung im Hinblick auf die Olympia-Quali statt. Zwei Tage später ist die Cross-Weltmeisterschaft in Frankreich. Da ist schon ein gewisses Risiko für mich, aber... No risk, no fun!

Here's an interview with Erik Zabel that almost didn't happen -- and gives his views on cycling websites.

And finally, Zabel spoke: Internet site? No, I do not talk to internet sites anymore, they only report lies...Internet is crap. Sorry.

You have to appreciate Herr Zabel’s tone as he uttered these words… absolute loathing and disgust for websites…. The, I'm sorry part really didn't sound like an "I'm sorry, I'd love to, but I just don't associate myself with the internet anymore." No, this was more like: "Sorry, you little peon, I don't know who you are, where you're from, but why the hell are you bothering me?"
...

I was so utterly dumbfounded, I couldnt believe it. I had seen Erik Zabel so many times on TV, I’d seen him give short interviews and he always seemed like a quiet, good-natured kind of guy… But not today. It was so very Kafkaesque, as the dominating figure of Zabel lashes out and leaves a poor little underling (me) mystified and lost.

Note: Zabel ended up giving him an interview.

Tscha, die zwei Gesichter des Ete Zabel. Im TV kommt er ja meistens recht witzig und schlagfertig rüber und auch die 3, 4 Mal, die ich ihn live gesehen habe, war er freundlich. Ich hab aber auch schon Leute gehört, die ihn total arrogant und missmutig erlebt haben. Soll keine Autogramme geben, sich den Fans gegenüber hochnäsig verhalten, sie nicht beachten und solche Sachen halt. Also wenn ihr ihn interviewen wollt, dann besser nach einem Sieg...
