Alessio-Bianchi had mixed fortunes in the first stage of the Driedaagse van de Panne, which finished in Zottegem. Although local boy Scott Sunderland (11th) and Marcus Ljungqvist (8th) both made the crucial 20 man selection on the Leberg, two of the team's other riders were involved in crashes, which darkened the mood.
The most seriously hurt was Danish rider Michael Skelde, who crashed on the first run in to Zottegem after approximately 120 km. He was taken to the nearby hospital and placed under intensive care, as he sustained heavy concussion and two hairline fractures of one of his vertebrae. He is wearing a collar around his neck and his head is bandaged. He is expected to remain in hospital for three to four days.
The other Alessio rider who fell was Martin Hvastija, who had to get three stitches in his eyebrow, although he did finish the stage. X-rays showed that he had no fractures, even though he hurt his collarbone.

The dramatic photos of the unconscious rider lying on the Tarmac made for very uncomfortable viewing. Fortunately, medical staff were quickly on the scene of the accident, and a combination of that, the fact that the hospital was so close by, and that Skelde was wearing a helmet means that there’s a good chance of the Dane leaving intensive care on Thursday morning.
"He had another CT scan this morning and the doctors at the Sint Elizabeth hospital in Zottegem are pleased with the results. There’s no damage to the spine and they don’t expect more bleeding in the brain. But he’s had very severe concussion and will also need to wear a neck brace for a time," said Skelde’s Alessio team-mate Scott Sunderland’s wife Sabine, who immediately went to the hospital when she heard of the accident, and also visited her husband’s team-mate this morning.
"Michael looks so much better today. He knows what happened and has spoken to his wife, Christa, who is on her way to Belgium."
Apparently, Skelde got caught on an iron bar sticking out from some roadworks and, without being able to ward it off with his hand, went down headfirst.
"Without his helmet he would have been much worse off," said Sunderland, who herself has some nasty memories of when her husband almost lost his life in a crash after being hit by a TVM team car at the Amstel Gold Race in 1998.
"Michael’s team-mates are all quite shocked and shaken up, and it also brought back bad memories for Scott."

Scott Sunderland berichtet:
First we had Michael Skelde, who fell heavily during the first stage of De Panne, taken to the hospital in Zottegem. He's getting there slowly but surely. In the next couple of days, he should be able to be transferred to hospital in Luxembourg, closer to his home.
He has a fracture in one of the neck vertebrae and is going to need to wear a brace for three to six weeks. He's lucky it wasn't further down as there's a good possibility he could have been in a wheelchair for life. There's no fracture of his skull, although the impact has gone through his helmet and he's still very concussed. He is improving every day though.
It's a tough sport and at this very moment it's hard on his family, himself, his whole career. I feel a lot of sympathy for him and I hope for the best for him.
Then, Martin Hvastija had to be taken to the same hospital, also during Tuesday's race, to get a wound on his forehead stitched up after crashing earlier in the stage.
Then, on Sunday, Marcus Ljungqvist, who had been riding really well went down, again near Zottegem, and had to get six stitches in his eyebrow. It looked like he'd been clubbed by Mike Tyson. His knee took a whack too.
