Belgians Tom Steels and Matthew Gilmore found it hard going representing their country in the madison at the first round of the Track World Cup in Moscow. Steels fell twice and Gilmore once during the heat and final, and Steels finished up with a 7cm splinter of wood in his back.
"It was a race for real kamikazes, hence the falls," Steels was quoted on VRT Teletekst. "After the race the doctor had to remove a seven centimetre splinter from my back. Fortunately my road campaign is not endangered."

Frenchman David Moncoutié suffered a particularly painful fall in Tuesday's Trofeo Laigueglia in Italy. The Cofidis climber was part of a twenty man group before he ended up off the road and out of the race. Several hours in the hospital for x-rays and three stitches on the knee later, Moncoutié appears to have escaped without serious injury and could still start this weekend's Tour du Haut Var as planned. ... Moncoutié's teammate Cédric Vasseur was also forced to abandon in Laigueglia, suffering from gastro-intestinal woes.

Johan Museeuw (Quick.Step-Davitamon) is having problems with diarrhoea in the Ruta del Sol, which finishes today. "I think I can finish here," he was quoted on VRT Teletekst. Then when I can recuperate, I should come up well again. I will not be at my best in Het Volk, but I want to be going well from Dwars door Vlaanderen."

In his crash in yesterday's slippery edition of Classic Haribo, Lotto-Domo sprinter Robbie McEwen injured his knee again, the same one that has been giving him problems since the start of the season. Although it's not expected to take him out of action, it could reduce his chances in Het Volk and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne this coming weekend.

South African Robert Hunter (Rabobank) will miss Het Volk after damaging his ribs in a crash in the recent Ruta del Sol in Spain. It is uncertain yet as to whether he has broken any ribs, but doctors have ordered him to stay off the bike for the time being. Hunter, winner of the Tour of Qatar, is expected to return in Paris-Nice at the end of next week.
