Team 2011: not yet announced

Best Mock List ranking: new

In his first Elite year, 2007, Sebatian Balck finished 13th in the U-23 Ronde van Vlaanderen. 2008 he was second in the Danish Fyn Rundt (1.2). In 2009 he had a minor breakthrough. On the fifth stage of the Olympia's Tour (2.2) he finished fifth. In the Scandinavian Open Race, he finished third behind teammate Stenberg, who is preparing for the Mock List. The main highlights of the season came overseas. At the Univest GP (2.2) in the US, he held his own against the international competition and was fifth overall after three stages.

He was also successful in time trialing this year. With a ninth place in the time trial and an eighth place in the second half-stage later that same day, Balck was able to claim the fifth place overall at the Triptyque Monts et Chateuax (2.2U). The Olympia's Tour ended with an admirable eighth place. At the Swedish time trial championships he finished second only to Larsson. In September he hopes to top his last-year's perforrmance in the Univest GP (2.1). Sebastian Balck is a man for the middle-hard one-day and stage races. He can prove himself for the last time in the U23 elite at the World Championships in Australia. He won't have anything to do with the outcome of the road race, but a finish in the top ten of the time trial is possible.

If a rider wins Subida a Gorla, most likely he will get a Spanish Pro contract. But not only this makes this race so interesting. A win there is a sure indicator of talent. Riders like Contador, Sastre or Joaquim Rodriguez are now widely known as dominators of the Grand Tours of the last years.

But there are even more interesting things about the young Spaniard. Not only is he able to win in climbs, but also knows to time trial and is quite fast in sprints, too. In 2007 and 2008, he won the Spanish Junior Time Trail championships. This year he took the same title in the Under 23 category. Moreover, all his results on the Junior level show that he may be a tour rider in the making.

In 2010 he also won a stage at the Vuelta Madrid Sub 23. There he beat later overall winner Daniel Diaz in a sprint.

In all likelihood Jesus will follow his brother José to join the Pros at Caja Rural and will ride for them next year. His career to become an excellent tour rider seems to be predetermined and it will be exiting to watch it.

That Poland is capable of producing talented young riders was already shown by the Mock List nomination of Jaroslaw Marycz (ranked 32nd) last year. Whereas this rider who now races for Saxo-Bank failed at the European Championships 2009 as a runner-up, this year a compatriot could succeed in winning the European Championships in the Under 23 class. And so Piotr Gawronski naturally is a case for the Mock List.

The 20 year-old from Golczewo (Western Pomerania) has always been in the shadow of same-aged Michal Kwiatkowski, Poland’s biggest hope. Even so, Gawronski belonged to the top riders in the Junior category, placing 3rd at the time-trial European championships in 2007, at the road European championships (behind Le Bon and Rowe) in 2008 or at the Peace Race (behind Kwiatkowski and Sagan) of the same year.

In the Under 23 class he races for MG Kvis Norda mainly in Italian amateur races, and while he often is an animator, he rarely gets results. But of all things he succeeded in the soaring heat of the European championships in Ankara: when 30 km from the finish the decisive breakaway formed, Gawronski was in it. Together with Portuguese rider Oliveira he could hold off the approaching field and comfortably beat the Xacobeo-Pro in a sprint, celebrating the biggest victory of his career.

It is less surprising that the Milan sprinter Giacomo Nizzolo could celebrate his first success on the track. Already in 2007 he could score medals at the Italian Junior Championships and at the Junior World Championships in Keirin and Team Pursuit. But since 2008 and the switch to Trevigiani Bottoli Nizzolo, who has been into cycling since the age of six, focused entirely on road racing.

At first, with moderate success in 2008, but then, in the following season Nizzolo exploded properly. Twelve wins in 2009, ten wins in 2010, to that more top five placing than any other U23 rider in Italy. Although Nizzolo can withstand slight hills, it is often the flat criteria in which he prevails.

By his own statement Nizzolo will be nothing but the best sprinter in the world. For a sprinter that is of course the right attitude. In no other country in the world there are probably as many local races in which Nizzolo can improve his qualities. However, he won’t meet the same tough competition anywhere. But to make it Nizzolo certainly shows the necessary consistency and hardness, since two years to the day, in a very impressive way. And who knows, maybe someday he even does better that his sports idol Tom Boonen and wins his favourite race Milan-San Remo.

The writer is familiar with the up-and-coming Belgian sprinters. In 2007 it was Roelandts who was afraid to make the step up to the pros after his strong 2006 season.

He fell in the Mock List becuase of that, but his neo-season with Lotto was great.

Frederique Robert can't show such results, but the potential is there. The Belgian, born 25.01.1989 in Geel, is with his 1,75 meters and 68 kg doesn't at first glance appear to be the born sprinter. Robert rode previous for the BC Balen and the CT PWS Eijssen. He was a stagiaire for QuickStep in 2009 and finished in the top twenty three times in sprints at the Tour of Missouri. The end of the season he had a fourth place in the Omloop van het Houtland-Lichtervelde (1.1) behind Brown, Wagner and Eeckhout, and ahead of (among others) Goddaert, Flahaut and Förster, and also finished sixth in the Nationale Sluitingprijs (1.1).

Robert could boast of 45 wins in his palmares up to 2009, including such races as the Ster van Oost-Vlaanderen, Gooikse Pijl, and Kattekoers Ieper (his biggest success to date) as well as the overall win in the Beker van België. His only wins in UCI races came in 2008 and 2010 at the Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux (2.2). Two years ago he beat Vermeltfoort in the sprint, this year he beat Bol, Phinney and Kittel. He also finished ninth in the Omloop der Kempen and 11th in the European championships in Turkey.

As it did last year, QuickStep showed its faith in him as a stagiaire. It is already known that he Robert will have a pro contract with QuickStep as of 2011.

Rather unusual for any Dutch hopeful talent is that Pim Ligthart never raced for any Rabobank talent team. After an exclusion for an elevated hematocrit value at the track World Championships 2008 in Manchester maybe he was persona non grata for the Mini-Rabos. So Ligthart was forced to search (and find) his luck in France.

Since his Junior days the Dutchman is at home both on the road and on the track. Dutch champion titles in Scratch, Omnium and Points Race as well as a World Junior silver medal in the Madison (2006) and even participations in Sixdays and top twenty placings in UCI ranked races show this. After two years with the Dutch continental team Krolstone Ligthart joined the French amateur club AVC Aix in the beginning of 2009, for improving his climbing abilities. In 2010 he decided to concentrate fully on the road. With success: great results at Nations-Cup races in the first half of 2010 (3rd La Cote Picarde, 2nd ZLM Tour) brought a stagiaire contract with Vacansoleil. Even in his first race for the Dutch pro-continental team Ligthart could show up with a 4th place at a stage of the Tour of Denmark. Like in most of his road successes also this race was decided in a sprint. In the Tour of Britain (2.1) the Dutchman proved his qualities both in breakaways and as a helper for Bozic.

It remains to be seen if Ligthart raised enough interest at Vacansoleil to get a Pro contract for 2011. Some reasons he could give at the World Championships in Melbourne – the race profile might suit him.

Alberio comes from the track, where in 2006 and 2007 he finished 3rd twice in the team sprint in the youth category. In the Under 23 class he was European Champion in 2008 in the Madison, together with Elia Viviani. He also raced on the road, mostly in one-day-races in Italy. As a Junior he won the GP Dell´Arno. In his first Under 23 year he promptly won the Trofeo Edil C (1.2) in spring, leaving some 2010 Neo-Pros behind (de Negri, Marycz, Peruffo, Cimolai). Soon after he finished 10th in the Under 23 race GP Palio del Recioto (1.2U). In June there was another top-ten placing at the Trofeo Alcide Degasperi (1.2). Else the year was pretty blank.

This year he was more successful. After placing 3rd at the GP Palio del Recioto (1.2U) he had his first win in May at the GP Industrie del Marmo (1.2), where he after all beat Rowe. Other top-ten placings soon came: Trofeo Citta di San Vendemiano (1.2U) – 4th, Trofeo Alcide Degasperi (1.2) – 9th and Trofeo Citta di Brescia (1.2) – 4th. Then he dared to travel outside of Italy. He even left the continent to dominate the Tour de Rio (2.2). Two stage wins and the overall success he added to his palmeres. The competition wasn´t too strong, but at least Team Type 1 and Scott – Marcondes Cesar – Sao Jose dos Campos took part. If these successes are enough for a Pro contract, only the future will show. But it is not impossible after all.

Slovenian Under 23 riders were quite dominant this year, and Luka Mezgec was one of them, even if he had little results outside of Slovenia. This was caused by his transfer from MBK Orbea to the Slovenian Continental Team Zheroquadro. There he has both old Pros as well as young guns around him, helping him improve his qualities.

It is difficult to tell exactly what type of rider Mezgec really is. In Slovenia he won Vzpon na Mohor last year, a race featuring quite heavy climbing. He is also known as Under 23 Cross Champion of his country. He became more widely known in June of 2010, when he won the Canadian race Coupe des Nations de Saguenay. He raced very intelligently to take the overall win, even without taking any stage, when others were exhausting themselves to no avail. That he also can hold his ground amongst the pros was proven in the Polish race Course de Solidarnosc (2.1). There he achieved two Top 10 placings in the decisive stages and overall he finished 5th, ahead of his captain Matija Kvasina.

Where the road for Luka Mezgec will lead to, still remains to be seen. The competition in his own country is quite strong with Kump, Furdi and the Tratniks, and also the Juniors are waiting in the wings.

Andrea Guardini

Type of Rider: Sprinter

Biggest Success: Stage victory Baby-Giro 2010

Team/Club 2010: Casati NGC Perrel

Stagiaire: ISD – Neri

Team 2011: Successor of ISD (Farnese Vini?)

Best Mock-List Placing: new

Web: www.it.netlog.com/a_guardini

Andrea Guardini may only be ranked 42nd in the Mock List, but he is top in one essential statistic: no other nominated rider has taken more victories in 2010 (by the end of September). Even if races like the Coppa Comune di Piubega or the Trofeo Lindo e Sano may not be at the center of attention of talent scouts, the consistancy and efficiency of Guardini´s 2010 season inspires. He´s reached 19 Top 10 places in one-day-races in Italy, with no less than 14 wins amongst them.

The Italian, who was a successful track cyclist as a junior (European Champion in Keirin 2007), scored 15 victories so far this season – every single one of them was in mass sprints, the most valuable of them being the stage win at the Baby-Giro (2.2) against Giacomo Nizzolo (see rank 47). What limits Guardini´s publicity until now is: a) he rarely races outside of Italy; b) he rarely does UCI ranked races. This is because this year he races for the small amateur team Casati NGC Perrel, while last year he was with Lucchini – Neri Sottoli, the farm team of ISD, where he was overshadowed by now ISD-pro Pierpaolo de Negro. As it happens, this August Guardini and De Negro again were racing for the same team – Guardini´s serial victories earned him a stagiaire spot at ISD and also a contract for his first Pro-engagement at the follow-up team of ISD, that as much as we know today will be named Farnese Vini in 2011.

Guardini himself describes his sprinting style as a mixture of Petacchi and Cavendish, so the Green Day-fan with a degree in electrical engineering has to count on one thing: lots of sprints.

At the age of 18, Nacer Bouhanni became French police champion in 2009, and one year later he repeated this success at the military championships.

Bouhanni, born July 25, 1990, has ridden since the start of this year for UVCA Troyes. The end of May the finished the first stage fo the Tour de Gironde (2.2) as fourth, ahead of (among others) Barbosa and Milram stagiaire Schäfer. After a solo victory on the second stage, he took over the leader's jersey, but missed out on the overall title because of an escape group on the final stage, and he finished fifth overall. He twice finished fifth in the Ronde de l'Oise (2.2). He drew FdJ's attention with a seventh place at the Tour Alsace (2.2), fifth place at the French amateur championships, and fourth place at the European U-23 championships behind Gawronski, Oliveira and his countryman Demare.

Since August 1, Bouhanni has used his time a stagiaire to recommend himself for a professional contract in the coming season. He was fourth in the sprint of the peloton at the opening stage of Paris-Correze (2.1). He also brought in fourth place in the second stage of the Tour de l'Ain (2.1) behind Feillu, Chainel and Gallopin. At the Tour du Poitou Charentes (2.1), he just narrowly missed out on his first pro win for FdJ as second behind Engoulvent. He beat out, among others, Casper, Colli, Mondory, Rossi, Kristoff, Rollin, van Poppel and Chtioui. Finally, Bouhanni was 11th at the one-day race Châteauroux Classic de l'Indre (1.1).

Bouhanni still isn't certain as a newcomer to FdJ for 2011, but he is on the best way to change that situation.
