David Hesselbarth comes from deep down in Bavaria, you could almost say Balkan. He is 22 and is riding his last season in the U23 for Team Heizomat. This year, he finally was able to continue the successes from his junior time.

In 2005 he moved to the juniors. In the very first race, he showed the German Junior elite where the rubber meets the road, and left among others Stauff, who today earns his living in the ProTour, far behind. At the strong international occupied Trofeo Karlsberg he finished on a strong fifth place. He had to give in against among others Smukulis and Denifl. At the Niedersachsen - Rundfahrt der Junioren Hesselbarth finished in sixth place, the cornerstone was his third place on the first stage. In Wallenhorst only Hagen and Gautier were faster.

2006 began with similar success. At the Bundesliga race Berlin – Bad Freienwalde – Berlin he became second behind Degenkolb. At the Giro della Toscana he was 43rd , but at the stages two and four he took third and fourth place. A week later he won the Bavarian Championship. In June, he even won the national title in Offenburg. The Trofeo Karlsberg was not as good as last year. A month later at the Grand Prix General Patton in Luxembourg it was going much better. By the victory of Gert Dockx, he could keep last year’s winner of the Mock List Rasmus Guldhammer at a distance. At the World Championships in Spa he was the best German (19th).

Team Heizomat Mapei hired him, and since 2008 he rides for the team. The first two U23 years he had to do without any victories, but surly he rode with good placements. In 2007 at the international Mainfranken Tour (2.2U) he was third on the second stage, and ranked fourth overall. In the Bundesliga race in Ilsfeld he became second behind Dominic Klemme. At the end of the season, at the Nürnberger Altstadtrennen (1.1), he became eleventh, one place ahead of Knees, who was best the Milram pro. 2009 was also without victories. His sixth place in the Bundesliga race in Cadolzburg was his best result.

Because he couldn’t confirm his results from his junior time, many had already written him off. This year however, he got his breakthrough. In 2010 he won two races in the U23 –league, Cadolzburg und Ilsfeld, and is placed eight overall before the last race. In Thüringen- Tour (2.2U), he was able to take a ninth place in difficult terrain. At the National Championships in the Harz he ended up before amongst others Hondo and Wegmann and finished on a tenth place. The best result he got in France. At the Tour d'Alsace (2.2) he became fifth and best German. The decisive factor was the fifth place at the strong team trial in the national team, as well as the two tenth places on the first two stages. At the Sparkassen-Giro (1.1) in Bochum, he found the right group. But as the worst sprinter in the group he finished seventh.

That David Hesselbarth is a good All-rounder, a passable sprinter and quite good on longer hills, showed his most recent result, his third place in the German Mountain-DM in the Black Forest. His biggest problem seemed to be the missing German Profiteams. After the departure of Milram, there is no German ProTour-Team anymore. However NetApp wants to become ProConti. And in order to upgrade their team they signed the young German for next year.
